In spring, the vines wake up as the first warm weather arrives.
The roots then draw sap from the soil, which is carried to the tips of the branches. The push is so strong that the sap beads on the shoots. The vine is said to "weep".
This is the signal for "spring pruning".
The first buds gradually open and tiny, fragile leaves spread out.
