For uprooting, replanting or new planting in Champagne, the Champagne House must make an administrative declaration.
After resting and preparing the soil, planting can take place before the end of May (end of July for potted plants).
The plants will then only be able to produce " Champagne appellation" grapes 2 years after planting.
Champagne regulations set the maximum spacing between rows at 1.50 m, and between stumps on the row at between 0.90 m and 1.50 m. The sum of these distances must be less than 2.50 m.
For information, the average planting density in Champagne is around 8,000 vines per hectare. This high density means a lower grape load per vine, and therefore better quality.
